The history of rugby dates back to the early 19th century in England. The game was said to have originated from the ancient Greek game of harpaston and the traditional folk game of football. In 1823, during a football match at Rugby School in Warwickshire, a student named William Webb Ellis supposedly picked up the ball and ran with it, thus creating a new style of play.

This event is often considered the birth of rugby, and Rugby School became known as the birthplace of the sport. The game quickly gained popularity among other public schools in England, and each school developed its own set of rules. In 1845, the first written rules of rugby were established at Rugby School, known as the "Rugby Rules."
As the sport spread to other parts of the United Kingdom, variations of the game emerged. In 1871, the Rugby Football Union (RFU) was formed in England to standardize the rules and regulations of rugby. This marked the beginning of organized rugby as a sport.

Rugby continued to grow in popularity, and in 1886, the International Rugby Football Board (now known as World Rugby) was established to govern the sport globally. The first international rugby match took place in 1871 between England and Scotland, and more nations joined in the following years.
Throughout the 20th century, rugby evolved and became more structured. The sport was included in the Olympic Games in 1900, 1908, 1920, and 1924, but was later removed. However, rugby sevens, a faster-paced version of the game, was reintroduced to the Olympics in 2016.

The Rugby World Cup, the pinnacle of international rugby, was first held in 1987. It is now held every four years and attracts teams from around the world. New Zealand has been the most successful nation in the tournament, winning the title multiple times.
Today, rugby is played and enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. It is known for its physicality, teamwork, and strategic gameplay. The sport has different variations, including rugby union, rugby league, and rugby sevens, each with its own set of rules and characteristics.
