Gateball, also known as "Gētobōru" in Japanese, was invented in 1947 by Suzuki Kazunobu in Japan. It was initially created as a recreational activity for older individuals to stay active and engaged. Gateball quickly gained popularity and spread throughout the country.

In the early years, gateball was played with a wooden mallet and a ball made of bamboo. The game was played on a rectangular field with five gates, and the objective was to hit the ball through the gates in a specific order. The team that completed the course in the shortest time with the fewest strokes was declared the winner.
Gateball continued to evolve over the years, with the introduction of new rules and equipment. In the 1960s, rubber balls replaced the bamboo balls, and metal mallets replaced the wooden ones. The game also became more competitive, with the formation of gateball clubs and the organization of tournaments.

Gateball gained international recognition in the 1980s when the International Gateball Federation (IGF) was established. The IGF aimed to promote and develop gateball worldwide, and it currently has member countries from all over the world.
Today, gateball is played by people of all ages and is particularly popular among older individuals. It is a non-contact sport that emphasizes strategy, teamwork, and precision. Gateball tournaments are held at various levels, from local to international, and the sport continues to grow in popularity globally.
